My cousin Hartley Pollard, proceeding me by three years, remembers on his first day at St Austell seeing Rowse, then in the VIth form making entries on the notice board. The intriguing thing was that the writing stood out, not by reason of size or style, but the fact that it moved between, rather than on the lines, which unusual position gave it an arresting quality.
When the tall fellow strode down the corridor, ignoring the motley crew, Hartley knew that there was someone storing future notoriety for himself in the recesses of his proud head, and the small awe-stricken boy was reminded of those "lexicon-minded" clerics outside Truro Cathedral, a picture of whom he had seen in his Great Uncle Harris's book.
